About us
Anglian Bus is a family owned company formed in 1981 and originally based at Loddon in Norfolk, operating a small fleet of coaches doing private hire and school contracts.
In Jan 1999, we were awarded our first bus service contract, by Norfolk County Council, the 580 operating 4 new buses between Diss and Gt Yarmouth.
Further contracts were won in subsequent years from Norfolk County Council, resulting in us outgrowing our 1 acre site at Loddon. A suitable new location was found at Beccles Suffolk which the Company bought and a new 10,000 sq ft garage was constructed on 7 acres of freehold land, this construction was completed in October 2000.
Further tendered bus services were won, from both Norfolk & Suffolk County Councils, following the relocation to Beccles.
In 2003, we embarked on our first commercial bus service, the 588 from Halesworth to Norwich.
As a result of continued growth in local bus service, the coach side of the business was gradually reduced.
In 2004, a second depot was opened on Rackheath Industrial Estate on the outskirts of Norwich, to cope with the increasing number of buses operated in and around Norwich City Centre.
In April 2012, Anglian Bus was sold to the Go Ahead Group, the Anglian livery and brand, staff and routes were all retained, and the management team remain unchanged. David & Christine Pursey retired after 31 years, to enjoy the fruits of their hard work.
Beccles Garage facility
The main operating base is fully equipped to undertake all maintenance and defect rectification in house with a fully skilled engineering task force operating from 0500 until midnight on a daily basis.
The facility incorporates a full Department of Transport test lane operating 2 days a week, a bus wash with water recycling and refuelling bay.
The base also contains the offices and rest areas.
Norwich Garage Facility
The garage at Rackheath is smaller than the Beccles garage but is self contained with its own operations, driving and engineering staff.
Current Fleet
We now have a fleet of 75 modern buses with an average age of 6 years, over 83% of the bus fleet are Euro 3,4 or 5 emission compliant and over 91% are low floor.
Many of the buses are fitted with CCTV with a display screen inside the bus.
Most of the buses are fitted with "telematics", a device which helps the bus driver to drive in the most passenger friendly and fuel efficient way. A program is in place to roll out these systems across the whole fleet.
All buses that operate in Norfolk are also fitted with the "BusNet" tracking equipment enabling the company to ensure timetable compliance as far as possible.
Eight brand new buses, at a cost of £1.25m, were added to the fleet in 2011.
Current Network
Our route network has grown extensively over the last few years, and currently reaches as far South as Ipswich, to the East on the coast at Hemsby, to the North Wroxham and to the West at Diss.
Many of the services are operated to and from Norwich City centre as well as services exclusively in the city.
Further route developments are planned in the future.
